Joshua and Jodie

San Diego, CA

I met Jodie on in 2005. I was in the Marine Corps, stationed in San Diego, CA but had orders to a new duty station in New York City. I was 25 years old and divorced. I had dated a few girls in San Diego, nothing serious, but after having been married for five years I just wasn’t comfortable with the whole dating game. A girlfriend of mine mentioned that I should try eHarmony. I admit I was apprehensive at first. I thought people who had to go online to meet girls were desperate. But, since I was moving to New York and didn’t know anyone, I thought I would go on eHarmony and it would be a good way to meet new people in New York. So, I filled out the personality test and even though I was still going to be in San Diego for the next month or so, I was matched up with a few people in the NYC area. Jodie was one of the first.

Jodie and answered each others questions and were soon exchanging emails and talking on the phone for hours. She was so easy to talk to and her laugh just made me feel good. We talked on the phone for a few weeks, and when I made it to New York we finally met in person. I will never forget that day. She was driving down to Long Island from her place just north of NYC. It was a Friday and of course traffic was bad. I had been in NY for two days and was really anxious to finally meet her. We were going to meet at my hotel and then go out for dinner. She called about 5:45 pm and said she was stuck in traffic and wouldn’t be there for at least another hour. Of course I was bummed, because I was so excited to see her and that just made it worse. Then she said she was just kidding, and that she was downstairs waiting for me! Right then I knew she was going to be a lot of fun, because that is totally something I would do. I went down to meet her and it was a moment I will never forget. Without saying a word she walked up to me and hugged me like I have never been hugged before. She absolutely would not let me go! What a wonderful feeling.

The next year was easily the best year of my life. Jodie and I had so much fun together. We went on trips to California, back to her home-state of Maine, and she came with me back home to Ohio for Thanksgiving in 2005 and I went with her to her family’s home for the holidays in 2006. We spent almost everyday together, learning about each other and having an amazing time. I had been thinking about proposing to Jodie, but though I would wait for the holidays in 2007.

Then tragedy struck. Jodie’s younger sister, Jane, was murdered on January 3, 2007. She was a 25 year-old single mother of a beautiful 3 year-old little girl, Serenity. This was an extremely difficult time for Jodie and I, one that we could never prepare for. As soon as I heard the news I knew we had to adopt Serenity. I also knew my plans for proposing to Jodie would have to be expedited in order to be able to be approved for adoption. I proposed to Jodie on her birthday, January 24, 2007. Jodie and I were married at the courthouse on Valentines Day 2007. It was a both a happy time and a very sad one. We knew our care-free lifestyle would be over with a child, but it was a decision neither of us ever questioned.

I had spent some time with Jane and Serenity, and just like everyone else I was taken by her. So, a few months after Jane’s death we adopted Serenity. We have been raising Serenity for the last 18 months and we have become quite the little family. It was very difficult going from a happy, dating couple to being married and raising a little girl. Instant parenthood. We were learning on the fly and had no time to prepare.

In September of 2007 I received my honorable discharge after almost nine years in the Marines. Jodie has been working from home for the company she worked for in New York, and she goes to school at night.  Jodie and don’t get to travel or do a lot of the things we used to, but it is a trade-off I am happy to have. We love Serenity more than anything and to hear her call me Daddy is the most wonderful thing I could ever imagine.

Over the last year-and-a-half we have been saving for the wedding ceremony we were never able to have. We had our wedding ceremony on Peak’s Island in Maine on August 29th. It was a beautiful ceremony and Jodie was the most beautiful bride I have ever seen. It was such a wonderful feeling to finally have a proper wedding and to see her with all of her family and friends. I can’t wait to get the pictures back. Jodie is a such a good mother. Much better than she gives herself credit for. I am so proud of her and I am so thankful to eHarmony for bringing us together. Without it, I would not be a husband to a wonderfully beautiful wife, nor would I be a father to a beautiful little girl. Thank you so much for our life together.
