Terry and Jean
It was like looking into a magic mirror and asking for that someone just like me that shared all the same likes, dislikes, fears, dreams and goals and with whom I could spend the rest of my life. eHarmony delivered such as person in the name of Jean of Neptune Beach, Florida. We were matched on September. 12, 2005 and started the corresponding process on September 14th. As we started corresponding through emails we found ourselves in Washington, DC at the same time. Jean had flown in from Florida and I from Minnesota. She was there for the birth of her first grandchild and I was there for a trade show. We agreed to meet on the 21st at a Georgetown Starbucks for our first face to face meeting. Unfortunately I ended up at the wrong Starbucks, both were on Wisconsin Ave, one on 34th and Wisconsin and the other at 3430 Wisconsin.
Fortunately, with cell phones we were able to meet. Jean and I discovered we both had two daughters; in fact we each had a daughter named Erin. We both had Sociology degrees. We shared all the same religious and political views. We even drove the same car, hers a white Toyota Highlander and mine a black one. We loved boating, riding motorcycles, and spending time outdoors. We loved to travel, do jigsaw puzzles or just sit back and read. We both love black licorice! We continued to talk daily on the phone and a month later we were back in Washington, DC. Jean attending a conference and I was giving sales training to my company’s Federal Sales Group. We met for our first real date, sharing steamed mussels at an Irish Pub then spending two hours in Barnes and Noble comparing children’s books we had read to our kids. Our relationship continued to flourish.
My first visit to her home was the following month. Jean has a beautiful home in a quiet neighborhood less than two miles from the ocean and 200 yards from the Intracoastal Waterway. Even her dogs took a liking to me. The next month Jean made her first visit to Minnesota in December. She got to experience -9 degrees and still loved what she saw. We were able to spend at least one week together every month since my company allowed me to work remotely from Florida. We have vacationed in Martha’s Vineyard, my cabin in northern Minnesota, my home in Minneapolis, Napa Valley, and a week taking care of her Granddaughter in DC. The greatest trip of all was two weeks in France last spring, one week cruising down a canal in eastern France going 130 miles and 33 locks by ourselves in a rented boat. Even when the weather soaked us to the skin and our teeth were chattering, we still laughed an enjoyed the whole experience.
On Thanksgiving in 2007, Jean wanted to go back to our original Starbucks to relive our meeting and what our relationship has turned into. She thought that would be the most romantic place to visit. So as she sipped her Chai tea, I asked her to do me a favor. The favor was that I needed her to marry me. She accepted and asked me to put the ring on her hand. I moved to Florida the first of January in anticipation of our getting married next fall. I want to thank eHarmony for putting this match together. Although I had 300 matches over a three month period, Jean’s match stood out as one of a kind. I chose eHarmony over all the other web-based matching systems because of the 400+ questions that not only I had to answer but the other people with whom I might be matched. I wanted a truly objective method of meeting my life companion. I know in my heart Jean and I will be spending the rest of our lives together. We are looking forward to retirement in the next three years. We can do this because we have had the same views on saving for retirement and what we want to do when that time comes. Thanks again for the magic match.
