Long Distance

Candice and Jimmy

Dear eHarmony Staff,

Thank you for leading me to the other half of my heart!  Here's our story...

In January 2008 I was in Washington, D.C. having dinner with two of my girlfriends, both of whom are married. I was venting about the perils of dating as a "thirty something", and I shared with them that after a few disappointing attempts, I had almost resigned myself to being happily and eternally single. My friend Dari, whom I have known since childhood, simply said, “Sometimes Mr. Right is not the boy next door. He may be hundreds of miles away. If you truly want to find him, you should consider looking beyond your back yard.” Then she said it, “Why not try eHarmony?” I immediately replied, “What??? I’m not desperate! What will people think of that?” After much debate, I started to come around. Although I was reluctant at first, I decided to give it a try.

I had been an e-Harmonite for about a month when on February 14, 2008, Cupid shot his arrow; Jimmy and I were matched based on our compatibility.  Our “e-Courtship” took a steady and progressive route from emails to instant messages, then to marathon phone calls that would make one think we were giddy teenagers instead of busy young professionals. We later discovered that we were equally skeptical about the possibility of meeting “the one” on a dating site, but as we got to know each other we became more convinced that it was a great idea. Three weeks later we agreed that it was time to meet face to face. I lived in South Carolina and Jimmy lived in California, so we chose Atlanta, GA as a neutral site. It seemed like the perfect choice because it was a short drive for me and a direct flight for him. We both had friends in the city (and escape plans) just in case this e-Harmony tune fell e-Flat.

Date Day arrived, and although we both had iron-clad back up plans in place, I was still extremely anxious about our meeting. I hoped he turned out to be everything I was expecting, and that I would also meet his expectations. We met, and almost instantly all of the anxiety disappeared. Everything fell right into place, and I almost forgot I was seeing him for the first time.

Jimmy arranged for us to go to the Hawks vs. Clippers game that night. Wow...Atlanta, a first date, and an NBA game surely had all the ingredients for an exciting night. We had no idea what was actually in store for us. The weather had deteriorated throughout the day, but we were oblivious to the dark clouds because we were both on cloud nine. As we were driving to the game, all of a sudden there was a loud crashing sound, “BOOM!” followed by all of the windows in the car imploding. We had just been caught in a tornado! It was sheer chaos with glass and debris all over us and people running and screaming in the streets. In the midst of the madness, Jimmy found his composure and immediately focused on keeping me calm and making sure I was okay. Needless to say we didn’t get to see any basketball that night, but at the very least I felt confident that Jimmy was not “fair weather!” In spite of it all, we had an amazing weekend, and before it ended we had already planned our second date in his hometown of Los Angeles.

A coast-to-coast whirlwind romance ensued over the following months, and we quickly discovered that long distance relationships are not for the faint hearted. They are expensive and require a lot of sacrifice, understanding, and most of all patience...this is definitely not my strong suit! As incredible and thrilling as it has all been, I can’t say that we were not faced with our challenges along the way. There was even contemplation whether we wanted to continue our cross country love affair. Through it all we held onto that strong connection we felt from the beginning, the faith in our love for one another, and the overwhelming support from our families and friends. All of these things helped us to persevere.

This year, on the Fourth of July weekend, almost 18 months after we met, Jimmy and I were preparing for a fun filled weekend in Las Vegas when he proposed. We had talked about marriage, and even though there was never a doubt in my mind what my answer would be, I had no idea that he was going to pop the question when he did. To my surprise, he had been planning the proposal for a while, and had already gained the approval of Dad, Mom, and my brother Walt. I was thrilled, and of course accepted without hesitation!

The last year and a half has been unbelievable. Through each experience we’ve grown stronger and more connected. We definitely feel prepared for life’s road ahead. One of the most important lessons we’ve learned is that whatever life hands us we’re going to make it...together.
