Lawrence and Karena
Karena and I were matched on January 14, 2008. I was deployed in Iraq at the time with the US Army, and she was a nanny in Oklahoma. We both decided on the slow approach and let eHarmony take us through all of the steps before we decided to actually make an effort at open communication. The first emails were the typical getting to know you emails and then they started to become more personal.
I thought it was awesome that we were able to get to know each other really well before we met, there was no pressure to get together because of the geographical distance between us. Normally by the first email when I told my eHarmony match I was in Iraq, they were not willing to be patient. But Karena was different.
After a few months, I was able to go home on R&R leave, it was in May so we had been writing each other for about 4 months now, and I asked her for her phone number. During the time I was home on R&R, I spent all of my time with my daughter, and I called Karena a couple of times, and just by the sound of her voice, I knew I liked her. Normally I am not a person to talk on the phone, I normally get bored real easy on the phone, but not with her, I just wanted to keep talking, but I also knew that my time with my daughter was short and I had to pay attention to her as well. The cool thing about that was Karena totally understood and didn't pressure the meeting between us.
So, I went back to Iraq after only talking to her on the phone and the emails started again. It was nice being able to talk on the phone and get to know each other a little more that way because it opened up the email conversations more because we understood each others' interests. Well the email traffic lasted all summer and into the fall when I finally got home from Iraq on October 4, 2008. By this time we were ready to meet each other, but we waited....just a few more days. We met on October 11, 2008 finally!
We had our first "date" at the Olive Garden. At first it was a little awkward finally meeting each other in person, but after a little while we both realized that we knew each other pretty well and the date went off great. For the next few weeks we spent almost every night going out together, except for the nights that I went down to Texas to see my daughter. But during those times, I was doing nothing but wondering what she was doing and how she was, wondering if she was thinking the same thing.
Finally one night in November, I took Karena to our present house. At that time it was just mine, and it was just being built. I took her through the house that wasn't complete showing her around, after the tour we stood outside and leaned against her car and were staring into the sky looking at all the stars you could see. Then I leaned over and told her that I loved her, she told me she loved me too.
Our wedding was very special, we had everyone that we wanted there. There were a lot of my co-workers so there were a lot of men in uniform. Her friends and family showed up and we had a blast. We have been married on week ago today and we just wanted to say thank you for all the help, bringing us together.
