Long Distance

Derek and Stefanie

Springdale, UT

Stefanie and I were matched on September 26, 2007, about a week or two after we each joined eHarmony. At the time, I had recently graduated college from Montana State University and was tired of the college bar scene. The town I lived in was a small college town of about 50,000 people. Chances seemed slim of actually meeting someone I was compatible with in a bar or library in that town. I was working as a retail store manager of a GNC after graduating college with a degree in Pre-Med in May of 2007. I had plans of attending Optometry school in the fall of 2008, but fate had other plans…

Meanwhile in Southern Utah, a girl who grew up in Utah was doing hair in an upscale salon. It turns out that meeting people was difficult in her town as well, so she randomly joined eHarmony, much like myself. We spoke every single night on the phone until 3 or 4 am. Her nickname for me was McDreamy, because we both loved Grey’s Anatomy and she knew I wanted to become a doctor. I also shared the same first name with the character in Grey’s. I flew to Vegas to meet her for the first time on her birthday, November 4 2007. We hit it off perfectly on her birthday weekend and left each other completely enamored. I brought her a teddy bear wearing a custom t-shirt that read “I love McDreamy.” We spent the weekend completely twitter pated, staring at each other constantly. As it turned out, her best friend was a flight attendant so she got virtually free airline tickets anywhere in the US. Stefanie flew up to Bozeman every weekend after that for about 3 months, until we decided that we needed to see each other every day.

In March of 2008 I decided to quit my job and pack my things up. Fourteen hours later, I arrived in St. George with my Jeep, a U-Haul trailer, and my cat. I was still planning on attending Optometry school in the fall, but that plan didn’t work out. We believe everything happens for a reason, so we just shrugged it off knowing that it would come at the right time. I got a job doing construction in the desert heat to pay our bills, hoping to get into school the next year. We were more in love than I could have ever imagined, and we were both amazed to have met each other on the internet. I proposed on New Year’s Eve 2009 with her designer ring in a sparkling glass of champagne. And to make the story even happier, I got accepted into Optometry school for the Fall of 2009 in Phoenix. So, we are moving to Phoenix with hopes of living happily ever after! Thanks eHarmony!
