If you can admit, with a straight face, that you enjoy “long walks on the beach” on a dating profile, you’re sure to love dating in Miami. Here’s our Top 10 Guide to dating in “The Magic City.”
Dating in Miami: On the Water
Surrounded by coastline, and blessed with tropical weather, Miami is a water-lover’s dream. Slather on the sunscreen and head on the water for a date on the ocean. Relax on a sailboat, fish for your dinner, or go for an evening cruise on Biscayne Bay. (It is the cruise capital of the world, after all.)
Want something a little more active? Take a scuba lesson and explore Biscayne Bay’s beautiful coral reefs.
Dating in Miami: By the Water
Feeling seasick by the suggestions above? Stay on dry land and go for a walk on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. Pack a picnic, rollerblade along trails by the water, or go for the ultra-romantic movie-worthy option: horseback-riding on the beach.
Dating in Miami: Parks!
There are over 80 parks and gardens in Miami. Enjoy the beautiful weather and each other’s company with a stroll at the recently renovated urban South Pointe Park, a 17.5-acre park with panoramic views. Find a bench and watch cruise ships sail by as the sun sets.
At Oleta River State Park, you’ll find 15 miles of mountain-bike trails. Rent a bike (or canoe), pack binoculars to help with wildlife-spotting, and embrace rustic dining at a picnic table. Log cabins are available for overnight stays — but aren’t recommended for first dates.
Flowers always make a good impression. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, located south of Coral Gables, boasts an extensive selection of rare tropical plants. The garden often sponsors art exhibits, too, with seasonal weekend festivals, including one dedicated to chocolate, featured throughout the year.
Dating in Miami: Good Eats
Nicknamed the “Capital of Latin America,” Miami is known for its “Floribbean” cuisine. Seafood, citrus, and Caribbean-influenced spices paired with gentle flavors like mango, papaya, coconut, key lime and honey make feature prominently in the mouth-watering meals.
If you can handle a two-hour wait, Miami institution Joe’s Stone Crab is known for top-notch service, the best stone crab on the planet, and key-lime pie to die for.
Sugarcane Raw Bar Grill’s tapas-style menu provides plenty of opportunities to lean in close.
Get hands on at Chef Allen’s. Depending on availability, you and your date might be able to nap a behind-the-scenes cooking seminar at this hot spot with one of the top chefs in Southern Florida.
If your budget’s tight, stroll along the Lincoln Road Mall or visit Bayside Marketplace. You’ll find a stretch of eateries at both places sure to make your wallet and stomach happy.
(Miami is also the home of Burger King — suitable only if you’re on a budget and have a very understanding non-vegetarian date.)
Dating in Miami: Live Music
Miami is home to the second-largest performing arts center in the country after New York’s Lincoln Center. The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts is home to the Florida Grand Opera and Miami City Ballet, and attracts operas, ballets, concerts and musicals from around the globe.
Want a more intimate music experience? Bars and clubs across the city feature some of the best Latin, reggae, hip-hop, dance and techno music in the county. Catch a great jazz, acoustic rock or reggae show at Miami Beach’s sexy jazz bar, Jazid.
Dating in Miami: Dance the Night Away
The couple that dances together stays together? Test the theory and take a dance class at beginner-friendly Tango Times Dance Company. Then seek out a Latin club and impress with your new moves.
Not ready to show off? Watch the pros in their element at Little Havana’s Casa Panza, where Spanish singers and flamenco dancers provide the perfect backdrop to your Spanish meal.
Dating in Miami: Game Day
Sports fans, take your pick: Buy tickets to your favorite team — Miami is home to professional teams Miami Dolphins, Miami Heat, Miami Marlins and Florida Panthers — and then celebrate a win, or mourn a loss, with post-game drinks.
For an athletic date, and an escape from Miami’s humidity, go ice-skating where the Florida Panthers practice, at Saveology Iceplex in Coral Springs.
Dating in Miami: Appreciate Art
Opt for a little culture and take your date to the Wynwood Art District where you’ll find over 70 galleries, museums and collections. If your date is on a Saturday, galleries and art studios open their doors to the public for a community-wide Art Walk.
Miami is also the home of the world’s largest contemporary art exhibition, Art Basel Miami. Dubbed the “Olympics of Art”, the event is held annually in December. Exhibits are free to the public and are set up in museums, convention centers, in parks and along beaches.
Dating in Miami: Laugh It Up
Break the first-date ice with a laugh or two. Crack up at Miami Improv if you’re up for a comedy buzz — there’s a two-drink minimum here — or head to the smaller and alcohol-free Just the Funny Theater. Warning: you might be pulled up to the stage to take part here.
Dating in Miami: Out All Night
Miami is a night owl’s dream. Dates never have to end in this city, with an unrivaled nightlife scene.
Find a 24-hour sidewalk café on Ocean Drive — outdoor air conditioners keep tables cool on sweltering summer nights — or head to Nikki Beach, an open-air club and lounge.
Want bottle service? Reserve a VIP table at the legendary South Beach nightclub Cameo.
If you’re looking for drinks outside of a club atmosphere, order a pint at the Playwright Irish Pub, or choose from more than 200 martinis at M-Bar where you’ll be surrounded by floor-to-ceiling panoramic views of Biscayne Bay and the Miami skyline.
Miami Science Museum opens its rooftop observatory until 10pm on the first Friday of the month for some good old-fashioned star-gazing. If you started your date with a walk on the beach, you might as well cap it off staring at the stars.
