Shannon and Craig

Location: Portland, OR
Married: April 17th, 2009

I have never been a big believer in love at first sight, and I have to admit I had just about given up on eHarmony after a couple of dates. Then I saw Craig's profile. It was the way he described his parents that piqued my interest, so I sent him my initial set of questions.

Craig saw my preference for fast-track communication and skipped the formalities and instead sent me an email with a couple of intriguing questions. A string of rather candid and intriguing emails ensued until we spoke on the phone a week later.

It was during this phone conversation that we each developed a crush on the other; the conversation was so fun it lasted into the wee hours of the morning, and Craig commented that he hoped our first date the following day would open precisely where we left off. Meeting the next day was anything but awkward; he hugged me when we met, and we headed to dinner, where I proceeded to rant just a bit about my job. He appreciated the authenticity of our dialogue as I had a few "real life" things I was dealing with at the time, and I appreciated his willingness to listen.

We walked and talked for a couple of hours after dinner and discovered many things we shared in common. We walked all over downtown Portland, and we helped a man who had met some bad luck to get a bus ticket home.

When we arrived back at my apartment, Craig walked me up to my door and said, "I'm going to go home and close all my other matches and tell them that I've found someone worth pursuing." Then he kissed me on the forehead and left.

Five days later Craig was introduced to my immediate family, and we purchased flight tickets to spend time with his family.

We were hanging out with my family at my sister and brother-in-law's house when Craig proposed. He said he wanted to talk with everyone, and proceeded to thank my family for including him, saying that he misses his family a lot, and that it was nice to have a family to spend time with.

He then thanked me for the last couple of months, saying that he loved how our lives had come together and that he wanted it to stay that way, forever. My mom's exclamation, "Oh my gosh! We get to be here?!?" provided a slight pause as she realized what was happening. Craig reached into his pocket, pulled out a white box and knelt down in front of me, asking me if I would marry him.

We wrote vows to one another that we first shared at our wedding on April 17, 2009.

Some of our friends and family members still think we're crazy, but Craig (an Iowa native) says his love for me is simple: "Where I'm from, when you love someone, you marry them." We are wild about each other and couldn't be more grateful for our relationship.
