The one thing I am passionate about...
I love family, friends, the kids in my life, my work, movies, reading, theater, gardening, art and nature. But I get a huge kick out of the unplanned adventure -- taking a wrong turn that brings me to something unexpected and amazing. In Japan, a friend and I stumbled on a mountain town reachable only by cable car. We stayed just one night in a monastery built in 1100 AD and the monks' kindness, cheerfulness and their commitment to nature and their beliefs taught me a lot about how to "be."
I typically spend my leisure time
I like to read, listen to music or NPR, and I enjoy being outside walking, biking or gardening. I also like to visit museums, gardens, concerts, restaurants, the lakefront. I try everything and then repeat the things I enjoy the most. For example, in Chicago we have a free classical concert every Wednesday at noon that is broadcast on the local classical radio station. The musicians are outstanding - often from the Chicago Symphony or equivalent - and the event is a delight. I go whenever I can.
The most influential person in my life has been
I'd like a man who finds playing Scrabble at home equally as exciting as going to another country for the summer and experiencing all that that has to offer. I'd like someone relaxed, funny and smart who can enjoy life fully with me.
The first thing people notice about me
Probably my hair - it's white - and women have often told me I have a nice complexion. One recently asked me if I'd had "work" done on my face. (Couldn't decide whether that was a compliment or not.)Last, I've been told I have a nice smile - maybe it's the dimples.
The last book I read and enjoyed
Excellent Women by Barbara Pym. I read it for our book group this week and it's beautifully written and so funny that I often laughed out loud. Given that intro it might sound dated now that I say it's about a single woman in 1950s England, a clergyman's daughter who didn't marry and was trained to be helpful and tactful. Despite her enormous kindness to those around her, she is a sensible woman who can see them for who they are and her inner and outer voices have two different soundtracks. The outer voice is kindly and generous, while the inner, still kindly, but also witty in her insightful criticisms. It's hilarious.
The three things which I am most thankful for
- I can depend on family/friends to help when I need it and to be lots of fun when I don't!
- Good fortune enabled me to travel, have a career, pursue interests, enjoy life fully.
- I'm thankful for my home and garden, my great neighbors and that I live close to Lake Michigan.
