The one thing I am passionate about...
I have a life long passion for theater. I don't create theater, but I feel strongly drawn by the ability of theater to tell stories in a way that other media cannot. Both of my daughters were active in high school theater and my younger daughter has a degree in acting - she performs often at the Vortex. Since I retired in 1999, I have been on the Board of Directors of the ZACH Theatre. I derive great satisfaction from the progress that I have helped that organization to achieve. I was the chair of the building committee during the design of the Topfer theater and President of the Board during the construction.
I typically spend my leisure time
Outings with my grandchildren. Going to theater and other performances. Travel. Walking. Reading. Watching movies in the theater or on video.
The most influential person in my life has been
Above all, I am looking for a person who is intelligent and interested in life; congenial, tolerant and optimistic. I have a fundamental belief in science; I am looking for someone who loves knowledge and learning. I am looking for a person who can accept others as they are; a person who does not judge everything through a narrow frame of correctness. I am willing to accept people who have opinions that differ from mine, and I have difficulty with people who can not do the same.
The first thing people notice about me
My love of knowledge. I am a teacher and a life long learner. I retired from an oilfield services company in 1999 and began teaching part-time at UT. That avocation of teaching at UT has continued. I also love to learn and constantly listen to courses from the Teaching Company when I am driving. I think that people see me as competent and direct. I tend to gather data before I express an opinion. I am open to other viewpoints and listen carefully. At the same time, I am clear about what I understand to be the facts. I have no patience for people who are ignorant and proud of it. There really are facts that cannot be ignored.
The last book I read and enjoyed
The most fun I have had with a book in a long time was The Martian by Andy Weir. I am an engineer, and this book totally appealed to my geeky side. It reminded me of the fun I had as a kid reading Jules Verne, Heinlein, Bradbury, Asimov, Le Guin, and many other great authors of science fiction.
The three things which I am most thankful for
- My family
- Good health
- Security to do whatever I want
The one thing I wish MORE people would notice about me
I am not skilled at getting to know people that I have not met before. I do best at getting to know people when there is a context for doing that: an activity or a committee or something like that.
Friends Describe me as
Dependable, Intelligent, Rational, Respectful
A little more about me
When I confirmed my identity for this website, it insisted on using my actual first name Robert, but I am known by my middle name Bruce. No one who actually knows me calls me Robert. I am an Electrical Engineer by training with a PhD. I was a corporate executive for 25 years. I retired from that and have been teaching part-time at UT for 15 years. I am enjoying an active life as a grandfather; it is a blessing to have the time for that. Both of my daughters and their families live in Austin. My wife of 44 years passed away in October 2015. So now I am interested in meeting new people - and maybe that includes you! I hope so.
