The one thing I am passionate about...
I am most passionate about my writing, partly as a freelance journalist, but more recently as a poet. It's extremely important to me to have time to write poetry. It gives me great joy. But I could not do this without having good solid friendships in my life. So I have two things I'm passionate about.
I typically spend my leisure time
Writing, swimming, reading, meeting friends, playing with my cats, hiking, traveling, seeing movies, going to concerts, or just being quiet at home. I don't watch TV, but I love videos.
The most influential person in my life has been
Understanding. That encompasses so much--good humor, stability, being able to LISTEN to other people and to respond sensitively but honestly, accepting that people are different, being realistic, human.
The first thing people notice about me
My friendly manner and sense of humor--or perhaps my English accent?
The last book I read and enjoyed
I'm reading "The Resistance to Poetry" by James Longenbach, a short book filled with insights into poetry's ability to question itself while also struggling towards some sense of meaning. It also conjures the joy of poetry! The last novel I enjoyed the most was "Songs of the the Kings" by Barry Unsworth, a British writer. I liked it for its wonderful lyrical language, its psychological insight, and its exploration of political power that seemed contemporary even though the book was set in Ancient Greece. Currently reading "Anil's Ghost" by Michael Ondaatje (he wrote "The English Patient"). It's beautifully written, sad and scary, but moving.
The three things which I am most thankful for
- The ability to write, especially my growing competence as a poet
- The people in my life, good friends, great colleagues, my sister... and my two cats.
- My home, an apartment that's small but filled with light and a sense of space. It's a peaceful haven.
The one thing I wish MORE people would notice about me
I don't know! I feel comfortable with the way I come across, I suppose. But I also believe that, after an initial gut reaction, people get to know one another gradually, and that's how it should be.
Friends Describe me as
Caring, Creative, Intelligent, Passionate
A little more about me
I love classical music AND rock music. I grew up in England, but moved to the States in my 20s. I have a strong sense of social justice. Civil liberties are important to me. I love the kids I teach--my job is very stimulating. After a career as a journalist, my ability to teach has been a pleasurable mid-life discovery, and one that combines well with my writing.
