The one thing I am passionate about...
Enjoying life, having new experiences and creating and maintaining strong relationships with friends and family, having fun, learning and growing intellectually and spiritually. I like to try new things, I love oddities and kitsch, dusty museums, strange landmarks, poorly punctuated signs, etc.
I typically spend my leisure time
With my friends, with my cat, reading and riding (after a ten year break I am back in the barn again). I laugh a lot, I like to dance around in my kitchen and sing. And I spend much too much time forgetting to water my plants. I like road trips, apple picking, antique stores, thrift, cool stuff from the side of the road. I like to cook but not every night. I like fresh air and sunshine and wind, and I like to walk in the rain and get really wet.
The most influential person in my life has been
Integrity. I think it's very important for a person to know who he or she is as an individual and to stand for something and not compromise on one's values because it's the easier path, it's important to own one's successes as well as one's failures and to not be afraid to change and grow as an individual.
The first thing people notice about me
How direct I am. I'm known for being very straight forward and speaking plainly... but always with a sense of humor.
The last book I read and enjoyed
I recently read From Beirut to Jerusalem by Thomas Friedman, about his ten years as a correspondent for the NYT first in Beirut then Jerusalem in the 1980's. Friedman has fantastic insight into the conflicts in the Middle East which I found very illuminating. I also recently read In the Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco as well as Inventing a Nation by Gore Vidal and Possession by A.S. Byatt.
The three things which I am most thankful for
- All of the great people in my life, family, friends and my cat (she thinks she's a people).
- My good health and all of wonderful opportunities I've had in my life, education, travel, etc.
- My sense of humor, everything is better with laughter, the good and the bad.
The one thing I wish MORE people would notice about me
I can't think of anything. I'm very happy with how I present myself to others, and I don't feel that anyone is missing out on the "real me". I guess sometimes people don't realize when I'm kidding them because my sense of humor can be really dry.
Friends Describe me as
Easy-Going, Generous, Genuine, Rational
A little more about me
I can laugh at just about anything, and I know that as long as I can still laugh, any situation, no matter how depressing, is survivable. I consider myself a "connoisseur of human folly" to quote Austen. I love absurdity. I place a high value on being literate, though I find that the more I read the less I've read. I tend to be very liberal in my views and opinions, though I think I live my own life in accordance with rather traditional values. I love to travel, and that is something I never intend to give up, I would even be willing to consider living abroad under the right circumstances. I miss Chicago, my hometown.
