More about me

The one thing I am passionate about...

Service: in my healing practice and as a volunteer for Hospice. And, almost as important, progressive politics. I care deeply about the way we treat those in our community who need our help or understanding.

I typically spend my leisure time

Doing something cultural; or, when the weather is fine, in my garden. I also walk regularly with my dogs.

The most influential person in my life has been

Two qualities which complement each other: a big heart and a fine intellect

The first thing people notice about me

That I am outspoken. I am highly educated and informed, and I'm quick to express my opinion.

The last book I read and enjoyed

Nuala O'Faolain's "Are You Somebody?" When she first published it, in the early 1990s, it revolutionized Irish memoir-writing. She is painfully direct about her upbringing, her life and her situation as a single woman in her fifties in an Irish culture that is still largely traditional. Her nearly-shocking ability to reveal her thoughts and emotions is an inspiration to me, to be more candid with myself as well as with others about my own thoughts and emotions. This book did what all great literature does for me; it made me reconsider my familiar, comfortable notions about life.

The three things which I am most thankful for

  1. My spiritual practice
  2. Humanity--mine and everyone else's--which makes life interesting
  3. My dogs

The one thing I wish MORE people would notice about me

That I sometimes need people to be supportive of me; usually, people notice my strength and look to me for support.
