More about me

The one thing I am passionate about...

Diabetes education and advocacy, especially regarding type 1 diabetes, is my greatest passion. It's a vocation, not only a personal passion: I left grad school in history to pursue work in the diabetes care industry. Secondary passions: live music, wine tasting, and bicycling.

I typically spend my leisure time

Biking or taking a long walk in my town. Hanging out at my favorite wine shop. Watching movies with friends. Trying out new recipes. Keeping on top of my e-mail correspondence with friends across North America and Europe. Researching musical and visual artists whose work appeals to me. Exploring San Francisco's shops, cafes, and museums. Reading fashion magazines. Singing in my church choir.

The most influential person in my life has been

Consciousness: spiritual, physical, emotional, political, and environmental

The first thing people notice about me

My intellect

The last book I read and enjoyed

_A Long Way Down_ by Nick Hornby was a better novel than I expected. Hornby takes on weighty themes and builds strong characters to bear them through a compelling story. The four central characters, each intending to commit suicide, encounter one other on the roof of a London building on New Year's Eve. They all intend to throw themselves off of it, but are distracted by one another. In the following 90 days, they meet regularly for support and encouragement. The characters discover that, with faith, perseverance, and courage, they can manage their problems. I was impressed by the authenticity of each character's voice.

The three things which I am most thankful for

  1. My supportive family
  2. My fascinating, diverse, faithful friends
  3. Opportunities to make a difference for others

A little more about me

When I lived in England, I spent a year in discernment for ordination in the Anglican Church. I may reenter discernment in the future. I revel in reasoned debate: I record "Prime Minister's Questions" on my DVR every week. Yet as a Christian, I am troubled by the lack of sensitivity that characterizes a lot of religious discourse.
