More about me

The one thing I am passionate about...

I love to read novels: it gives me the type of feeling of intimacy with the lives of the people in the books that I hope I can eventually get in reality with the woman in my life.

I typically spend my leisure time

Mostly--at least until recently-- in relatively solitary pursuits. I read a lot, mainly novels. I watch too much tv and dvds, and I sometimes play computer (role-playing) games. Though now that I am in a new city, I am doing more things to "get out"--going to museums, events, etc.

The most influential person in my life has been

I always hate this sort of question, implying that there is one single most important thing when of course it is a combination of things whose relative importance it is very hard to tease out(something I deal with professionally, in trying to figure out how things end up being balanced against one another in bioethics). I suppose I could say it is that her personality is one that (for unknowable reasons) draws me in, makes me want to listen to her, be near her all the time.

The first thing people notice about me

Perhaps that I am smart (or act as if I am!).

The last book I read and enjoyed

Peter Robinson, Piece of My Heart. I read lots and lots of novels, mainly mysteries of the police procedural type. What attracts me are not the crime-solving aspects (and I hate the CSI-type shows on tv), but rather the way the best authors these days in this area are delving into character. Other authors I love are Michael Connelly and Ian Rankin. And Barry Eisler's series of books about sort-of hired killer John Rain, which take place in Japan and other exotic locations (I've been to China four times), are great. (Update--I just read Henning Mankell's The Man Who Smiled.)

The three things which I am most thankful for

  1. That I am still mainly healthy and hopefully have a few good years left.
  2. That there is still a chance to meet the right woman and have a family.
  3. That whoever created the world also created women.

The one thing I wish MORE people would notice about me

That I am a very passionate person inside and not just the somewhat geeky guy that I might seem to be.

A little more about me

Why spoil the excitement and mystery of getting to know me? Ah, what the hell: if you are looking for some incredibly confident, macho guy, that ain't me. Though, a female friend and colleague recently heard the way I used to be describing myself here, and she thought I was giving a highly distorted picture, and not true to the way many women would perceive me. So, for the sake of being objective--I have an MD and JD, three Harvard degrees, was a editor and officer on the Harvard Law Review, have written three books, and I was chosen for my last two jobs following national searches. Still not especially confident, though!
