More about me

The one thing I am passionate about...

I am most passionate about fathering my two children. After that I am passionate about writing, making music, and my work. In general I strive to experience each moment as intensely as I can--not necessarily with fireworks going off in my head every second, but really experiencing being alive from instant to instant, whether I'm talking with my children or running or mowing the lawn. And part of that is finding what there is that is amusing in each instant.

I typically spend my leisure time

When I have my kids I enjoy keying in to their interests, and also sometimes coming up with a surprising new experiences for them. Aside from that I enjoy making music, alone and with other people. Other interests: reading, languages, movies, chess, beach walks, baseball (live or on radio) and Dance Dance Revolution. For exercise, I run.

The most influential person in my life has been

I want to be with someone whose sense of humor and life-play matches mine. I have a quick, quirky mind, and I want to be with someone who gets that and likes it and has it too--someone around whom I don't feel like I have to edit myself, at least, and who surprises and challenges me, at best.

The first thing people notice about me

That I have a certain intensity about me. Sometimes I feel like I intimidate people or seem stern or formal to them, even though I'm not trying to and don't want to.

The last book I read and enjoyed

I've just discovered the books-on-tape section of my local library, which helps tremendously with my long commute. Recent listens: The Great Gatsby, Howard's End. I'm re-reading the Aubrey-Maturin novels by O'Brian, and for mind-candy I get the New York Times Book Review. Each article is a triple-decker bonbon: you get a taste of what the book is about, a nibble of who the author is, and a touch of the reviewer's mind as well.

The three things which I am most thankful for

  1. My children
  2. My good health/physical well-being
  3. That I have many fascinating friends

The one thing I wish MORE people would notice about me

That underneath that intensity, I am a kind, compassionate, and whimsical man.

Friends Describe me as
