The one thing I am passionate about...
I am passionate about the beauty in the world around me. I realize that we as humans attempt to create beautiful things in the form of art and music and the like, and that we appreciate the 'standard' forms of natural beauty, from landscapes to flowers to pretty faces. I love those things, too. But there is so much more, both in humanity and in nature that is inherently beautiful, in its grace, symmetry, and hope. This can be a delicate and complex balance of an environment, or it can be seeing a cat spring to the top of the refrigerator in a single leap, or it could be the simple but unswerving tyranny of the second law of thermodynamic!
I typically spend my leisure time
I like playing softball in a league with my friends, though it's a league mostly of duffers, so we can compete okay without a lot of practicing! I play pool as well, and really like the concentration that involves. Finally, I enjoy making big meals, involving new dishes with new ingredients.
The most influential person in my life has been
Compassion. My casual friends would probably guess I'd say "intelligence" or some such thing, but compassion is so much more important. It's a necessary ingredient in kindness, honesty, generosity, empathy... all those abstract essentials that make people say about someone "That's a good person."
The first thing people notice about me
People first notice that I'm friendly and quickly comfortable with them. Is it revealing that I'm so sure of this because upon reading this question, I went downstairs and asked two people that I met yesterday what they noticed first? They both answered the same.
The last book I read and enjoyed
I read "The Mysteries Within" written by a retired surgeon, Sherwin Nuland. It discusses the body from a historical perspective. For example, it talks about how the heart came to be associated with emotion and love. Throughout he tells medical stories from his long career. I've read other stuff by him as well and recommend it.
The three things which I am most thankful for
- The continued happiness and love of my family and close friends.
- That I have had and continue to have choices in my life.
- That every day is new and challenging, and that seems like it will continue.
The one thing I wish MORE people would notice about me
Wow! That's a very difficult question for me, because I'm rather open and feel that I'm "an easy read" for people. I suppose if I worry about anything, it is that people will hear what I do for a living (I'm a scientist.) and will forget that I'm a person and not a stereotype.

A little more about me
I'm in a new job, I'm in a new apartment, and life seems like it's really getting moving. It's an exciting time.
