More about me

The one thing I am passionate about...

Horses and horsemanship. Reading history and biography. Thomas Sowell's articles, books and recommended readings. Writing. Beethoven, Mozart and Baroque music. 1930's & 40's jazz. Fitness. My fear for the Republic. My disgust with politicians who remind me of Stanley Baldwin and Neville Chamberlain (but at least, Chamberlain liked Britain). I want to drop dead while riding a horse in the mountains at age 90 (or older).

I typically spend my leisure time

Reading history and biography; riding horses; writing the two books I work on, conversing, watching films...eating...I actually enjoyed spending 5 months riding a horse on a lunging line 45 minutes a day, four days a week under the critical eye of the wife of an Olympic Bronze medalist to improve my riding. Listening to great music.

The most influential person in my life has been

Honesty and passion.

The first thing people notice about me

People tell me that I am erudite, well read across many fields, intelligent, articulate and a great listener; that I am out going and display a great sense of humor.

The last book I read and enjoyed

I read much more widely than this answer suggests: about 30 books per year. A recent title fascinated me: "The Great Raid". It deals with the true story of the dramatic rescue of 511 American prisoners of the Japanese during World War II. But for the rescue, the Japanese would have murdered all prisoners. The book demonstrates the remarkable courage and endurance of men and women in the most adverse of all circumstances. I liked the book most of all...because my father participated in the event depicted as well as equally dramatic rescues later in the Philippine campaign as a trooper in the 1st Cavalry Division.

The three things which I am most thankful for

  1. My children live on their own, prosper and enjoy excellent health
  2. I can ride and love horses; my love of animals in general
  3. I can still dream, learn, write, read, reflect and share knowledge;

The one thing I wish MORE people would notice about me

I'm really a bit shy deep down with deep feelings.

Friends Describe me as

Affectionate, Good listener, Intelligent, Passionate

A little more about me

I made a few million dollars and lost it all! Thankfully, I AM self supporting. I have succeeded beyond my dreams, failed beyond my fears and bounced back more than once. Parts of my 3500 volume library of history, biography and political philosophy suffered water damage. I started collecting my books at age 11, I had to discard many of them due to the water damage. It will take years to rebuild my collection....thankfully, about 100 of my hard to find horsemanship books remained high and dry.
