The one thing I am passionate about...
life, teaching, dignity, communication - allowing people to save face even when they screw up, peace to be more than the absence of war, intimacy, honesty and trust, good humor, genuine kindness, tolerance - but not indifference, can't stand people who don't train their dogs, classical music, interest in foreign languages and cultures, personal space (my own and that of others around me), did I say teaching? Good lighting, hot soup on a cold day, nature, respect, my children, education and learning, pleasant fragrances, travel, meeting new people - especially while traveling. Dignity and respect while under medical care.
I typically spend my leisure time
I love hiking the Konza Prairie, a Nature Preserve in the middle of Kansas. Don't watch TV. Naps are important. Listening to music. At the moment, I spend a lot of time updating this profile :)Spending time with my teenage children, either over the phone, or IM, or going places. Doing research online.
The most influential person in my life has been
Honesty probably comes first, but a good sense of humor is important, too, as is the desire and ability to take good care of oneself, physically, emotionally, mentally, financially. Compassion and kindness. And genuine respect for others.
The first thing people notice about me
Depends very much on the situation. If I am with a group of (new) people, you'll recognize me because I am the quiet one who listens and watches. When I am in charge of a professional event (concert, competition, business meeting), people notice that I appear competent, confident, calm, reassuring. In a business situation, I can be assertive, sometimes aloof. With a group of friends, I am chatty, sometimes bossy. If you meet me one-on-one, I may look like I want to cry because I am so uncomfortable meeting new people. (My teenage son says that one of his friends found me "soft-spoken" when she first met me.)
The last book I read and enjoyed
I used to be a voracious reader. Would take 20 minutes to look up a word in the dictionary because I'd come across so many other, new, fascinating words along the way. These days, I read mostly professional books and journals. I don't really enjoy it that much, though - I seem to have neither the desire nor the patience. Don't really know, why.I like children's books, but only as long as they don't teach a lesson. I can't stand moralizing.
The three things which I am most thankful for
- good health
- good relationship with ex-husband and teenage children
The one thing I wish MORE people would notice about me
Can't think of anything. The only thing that I tend to "hide" is that I am actually much more affectionate than I seem at first.
Friends Describe me as
Good listener, Intelligent, Loyal, Thoughtful
