More about me

The one thing I am passionate about...

I am never happier than when listening to music. Writing. Reading. Learning -- anything I've never seen, heard, or done.

I typically spend my leisure time

bike rides, BYOB Sri Lankan, dominoes in the park, flea markets, rock n roll, boozy storytelling, writing

The most influential person in my life has been

Wisdom and youth. A "tough constitution." Be nice to strangers. Be a little mean sometimes. Be curious, have confidence in yourself, realize you're no better or worse than anyone else you meet. Turn me on to a new band (I'll do the same for you). Read when you can. Tell the truth when you should, and - sometimes - when you shouldn't.

The last book I read and enjoyed

Currently I'm reading 'The Best American Short Stories of the Century,' which is fantastic and contains lots of surprises. Probably the best things I have read this year are Jonathan Franzen's essay collection: 'How to be Alone' and Russell Banks' 'Rule of the Bone.'In general: I read everything. Anything by David Sedaris or Joan Didion is worthwhile. The Fortress of Solitude. The Curtain. Nine Stories. I also like: Dwell, Wired, The Big Takeover, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, the back of the cereal box, insightful blogs, letters from faraway friends, last Sunday's New York Times, literary journals, and bathroom graffiti.

The three things which I am most thankful for

  1. my generally unflagging optimism
  2. freedom -- in every sense
  3. time/opportunity
