More about me

The one thing I am passionate about...

the younger generation, my college students: responding to their needs, helping them connect with resources, receiving their trust and sharing their hope -- this restores me and renews my courage. I also care deeply about prisoners, especially the ones in the prisons in my town. I do volunteer visiting there.

I typically spend my leisure time

I love the outdoors -- hiking, swimming, and formerly boating and bicycling. I like to repair and refinish old furniture. I go to thrift stores; I'll buy vintage clothing or a quilt or glassware, and I enjoy fixing them up. I am handy with tools around the house; formerly I had old houses and I enjoyed restoring or repairing parts of them. I like gardening too, though I am not so successful at it. I like electronics, never met a computer I didn't understand and like -- ever since my first "Kaypro" in 1984. The Internet is fun and a fascination, as I watch it develop.

The most influential person in my life has been

compassion, empathy

The first thing people notice about me

my voice --quiet but nice.

The last book I read and enjoyed

Currently reading Jesus of Nazareth by Joseph Ratzinger (the pope) simultaneously in German and English. I enjoy tracking the nuances, with significantly different twists in each version. Also, he makes technical mistakes in logic as he discusses various issues. This is giving me enormous insight into how he thinks, and why I disagree. At the same time, he has a poetic way of connecting unrelated historical facts. It is a challenge to try to get a handle on this alien mind. A flawed jewel -- "diamond in the rough."

The three things which I am most thankful for

  1. intelligence
  2. health
  3. honesty

The one thing I wish MORE people would notice about me

my vulnerability, fragility

Friends Describe me as

A little more about me

I am not sure about much of what I entered on this questionnaire. I really feel like I could be on both sides of a lot of the questions. I think of myself as having a "repertoire" of emotional and intellectual responses -- not just one unchanging style.
