More about me

The one thing I am passionate about...

I am passionate about trying to do the right thing...about discovering what I'm made of...about seeking new adventures...about finding happiness in life's twists and turns...about remaining eternally hopeful.

I typically spend my leisure time

I enjoy being outdoors. I like to find cozy, out-of-the-way hangouts to share with friends. I prefer watching an old movie or foreign film to watching most t.v. programs. I'm looking forward to finding new sites to investigate (hiking, museums, theater, baseball games, working out, wine tasting, book shops) in the DC area--since I just relocated here.

The most influential person in my life has been

I don't know what--or whom--I'm looking for. I've been single for eight years now, and have periodically thought I knew what my soulmate might be like. But, I have given up trying to predetermine these conditions. Still, I'd like to find someone a bit like me--honest, kind-hearted, self-made, knowingly and regretfully imperfect, adventurous, sometimes willing to risk failure. On the other hand, there are many qualities I am deficient in that would be wonderful to find in another--as a sort of counter-balance to traits I've always wished for in myself...like the ability to sing or play an instrument or experience sailing.

The first thing people notice about me

That I listen to them and am truly interested in their story.

The last book I read and enjoyed

I read a lot. In years past, it was a point of honor to always finish every book I started, even the mundane, the trite or the farcical. One good thing about getting a bit older--I mean wiser--is that it allows us to give up these kinds of self-imposed regulation. So, I can put aside books that I don't enjoy--to make more time for those I do. Right now, I'm reading The Kite Runner and A Writer's Guide to Everyday Things in Regency and Victorian England, also What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew (I write fiction, hence these odd titles). I also just started re-reading Fielding's Tom Jones, which I haven't read since I was a teenager

The three things which I am most thankful for

  1. I am grateful for the opportunities I've been given.
  2. I'm amazed and grateful for my grown daughter's determination and independence.
  3. I am thankful for the sometimes surprising kindness and support of friends.

The one thing I wish MORE people would notice about me

That my pleasant, agreeable nature does not mean that I don't know what I want or where I stand. It just means I am happily willing to go-along and get-along...when the options at hand are something low on ye olde totum pole.

Friends Describe me as

Affectionate, Articulate, Intelligent, Optimistic

A little more about me

I am--quite unintentionally--a bit of an enigma and so may be difficult to "match." I like baseball, blue jeans and beer in the bottle; yet I also have been known to enjoy champagne, high heels, crystal chandeliers and a sparkling view across the Torquay bay. I enjoy deep sea fishing, chili cookoffs, hard work outdoors; yet I love some pampered "girl" time...a sandlewood-scented bubble bath, shopping for shoes or taking time out for idle chit chat at a local coffee shop. The adventurous side of me may confound someone who might easily relate to the quiet, comfortable side of me. Or vice versa. As Doris Day sang, que sera sera.
