The one thing I am passionate about...
When I was less than two years old, I scared my mother nearly to death by escaping the house and running down the street. That moment captures my essence. I love being outside! I like solving puzzles and problems (like how to undo the locks on the doors). And I have an independent streak that age has fortunately tempered somewhat.
I typically spend my leisure time
I love reading and am never far from a book or two. I usually prefer history, popular science, and older fiction. I just finished reading all six of Jane Austen's novels: if you are a Lizzy Bennet, I'd love to hear from you! -- I also like setting physical challenges for myself: right now I'm training for a triathlon and hope to backpack around Mt. Rainier at the end of the summer. I try to visit family in Bend for a weekend every month to take advantage of the sun. I'd like to be with someone who wants to take advantage of the cultural opportunities in Portland.
The most influential person in my life has been
Self-confidence is sexy! By training I can be argumentative, so I appreciate a partner who likes to debate and assert her own opinions. I promise that, if I disagree with you, I will try my best not to be a jerk about it.
The first thing people notice about me
When people first meet me, I am quiet and probably come across as shy. There's some truth to that appearance, but I'm also trying to be polite: I'd rather seem shy at first than be domineering. It's easier for me to be assertive on someone else's behalf than be my own advocate.
The last book I read and enjoyed
I just finished re-reading Persuasion, my second-favorite Jane Austen novel. It is a story of second chances. Several years before the action starts, the heroine broke her engagement on the urging of a trusted friend. The plot follows her as she emerges from old influences and reconnects with her former fiance. The social humor is sharp, and the heroine is kind, perceptive, and deeply sympathetic.
The three things which I am most thankful for

- Professional independence--I love being my own boss!
- Good health

A little more about me
Ninety-nine percent of lawyers give the other one percent a bad name. In this context I try to be a one-percenter. Affability, fairness, and humility are traits I try to cultivate.
