More about me

The one thing I am passionate about...

The value of a liberal arts education and academic research in general. Knowledge promotes understanding and understanding promotes love.

I typically spend my leisure time

Reading; enjoying beauty in art, nature and performance; watching movies; vacationing in Aruba; playing with my cats; talking with friends; going to good restaurants

The most influential person in my life has been

I look for integrity and compassion in another person. (And I don't see things in black and white, so I keep answering these questions with more than one response.) Those two qualities cover a lot of territory: honesty, loyalty, trust, generosity, love, kindness, and more.

The first thing people notice about me

Usually people notice that I'm smart, but that I like to joke around a lot. My blue eyes tend to get attention, too.

The last book I read and enjoyed

One of the best books I've read is The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell. Briefly, it's a science fiction story about a Jesuit astronaut in the far future who is exploring an alien world. The plot is intriguing, but the main theme is really about communication, and the impact of making a single, inaccurate assumption. The author examines the meaning of spirituality and the role of God in the life of an individual. It blew me away.

The three things which I am most thankful for

  1. Friends
  2. Intelligence
  3. Health

The one thing I wish MORE people would notice about me

I wish they noticed that I am romantic--in a very girly way--and a little shy, despite my confident and outgoing demeanor.

Friends Describe me as

Articulate, Funny, Intelligent, Perceptive

A little more about me

I laugh a lot--at myself and the silly parts of human existence and bureaucratic administration. My friends say that I don't suffer fools gladly, and it's true. I am a feminist who enjoys the company of smart people and who is frustrated by the senseless stupidity of bigotry in all its forms. What gives me joy is the resilience of the human race and the great capacity we have for love and generosity, in spite of our foibles and failings.

Somewhat Liberal
