More about me

The one thing I am passionate about...

Living well, continuing to learn and making a meaningful contribution to the lives of others during what I hope will turn out to be the last third of my time on the planet.

I typically spend my leisure time

I engage actively in several dance communities -- the contra and swing dance communities in particular. I am currently taking a class in Argentine Tango. I like driving excursions to places I've never been, particularly if the trip promises to allow a walk through a historic church or cemetery where previous generations of my family lived, and particularly if it involves an exploration of a coastal harbor from which I might someday sail.

The most influential person in my life has been

Purpose, intelligence, curiosity, courage, warmth, self-awareness, elegance and a sense of adventure.

The first thing people notice about me

That I'm friendly, polite, confident and a good listener.

The last book I read and enjoyed

I am almost finished with historian Peter Gay's Modernism, a readable survey of the modernist movement in art, architecture, music and literature. I also recently devoured the last Jack Reacher novel that Lee Child published. I like Peter Gay's cultural history because it pulls together and shows the relatedness of many cultural manifestations of the same unifying idea, and so deepens my understanding of an historical epoch. I like Child's crime thrillers because they are among the best examples of the compelling plot development that makes the genre so entertaining. Jack Reacher is something of a hero of mine.

The three things which I am most thankful for

  1. Good health
  2. Close friends, professional colleagues and family members
  3. A good education and meaningful work

The one thing I wish MORE people would notice about me

That my shoes are always clean and polished. You can tell a lot about someone by paying attention to their shoes.

Friends Describe me as

Articulate, Perceptive, Romantic, Thoughtful

A little more about me

In high school I used to make out with Elaine on the band bus riding home from out of town football games. She was a very sweet girl. During the halftime shows, I marched along playing clarinet as Elaine played flute. We would sit for miles in our red uniforms on those uncomfortable bus seats in a continuous liplock. Years later, and after having lost touch with Elaine, I read in my hometown newspaper that she had been murdered by her husband. She died almost 40 years ago, but when I think about it now, I can still summon pangs of sweet sadness remembering Elaine.
