More about me

The one thing I am passionate about...

How about a list: (1) Pets! I will play with any animal (except cats, unfortunately; I'm severely allergic). (2) Travel! Small trips to the woods and long trips around the world. (3) Exploring NYC! (see 'leisure time' question below) (4) Staying in! Watching movies, writing, reading, cuddling, sleeping in on the weekends, etc. (5) Teaching urban high school students! I taught 10th grade English in Boston for five years; while I'm getting my Ph.D., I get to teach creative writing and oral storytelling to NYC public school kids. Exciting, you ask? Yes. Very, very exciting. (6) Storytelling! Its connection to identity, empathy, and community.

I typically spend my leisure time

For fun, I go out for food/drinks; attend storytelling shows, live concerts, theatrical performances, and book readings; watch movies; go to museums; write; run around in the woods; read The New Yorker; visit family/friends; do pilates; and NAP! I also love traveling. It's important for me to be with someone who loves the city just as much as he loves getting out of it every once in a while.

The most influential person in my life has been

Honesty. I want someone I can depend on to speak his mind, challenge me when I need to be put in my place, and never lie to or otherwise betray me. (On a related note, please have a truthful, accurate profile that portrays who you really are and what you really look like--seriously, gentlemen, there is absolutely no advantage to lying on here.)

The first thing people notice about me

My existence fully supports the 'sassy redhead' stereotype.

The last book I read and enjoyed

I read ~1,500 pgs a week, so this answer would change constantly. These readings have shaped me in significant ways: The Bluest Eye (Morrison), The Poisonwood Bible (Kingsolver), Things Fall Apart (Achebe), Hemingway's short stories, Native Son (Wright), Fugitive Pieces (Michaels), and everything Cormac McCarthy has ever written.

The three things which I am most thankful for

  1. The wonderful people in my life. Through a combination of time and effort put in and a stroke of serendipity, I have amassed a solid group of friends and loved ones whom I truly treasure.
  2. Nature. I seek it out and pay attention to it whenever possible. From the flower beds on the streets of New York to the blue grotto in Capri, I never cease to be amazed by how breathtakingly beautiful our planet is.
  3. Opportunity. I am blessed to have experienced (and to continue to experience!) one of the best educations our country has to offer, and a successful, fulfilling career is on the horizon for me. Considering how humble my beginnings were, I am eternally grateful for this.

The one thing I wish MORE people would notice about me

I'm extremely compassionate. I think that sometimes my extraextraextroverted personality can belie the fact that I care--quite a lot, actually--about other people's well-being, comfort level, and (if I'm to be totally honest) opinion of me. Yes, even perfect strangers.
