More about me

The one thing I am passionate about...

Comedy and music. I like to laugh and I like to think ... so whether it's through a song's lyrics and melody, an everyday situation that just becomes ridiculously funny, a comedy sketch or whatever ... if I'm enjoying a moment with friends that's funny or weighty (or both), I'm pretty happy.

I typically spend my leisure time

Some of my best memories in the last five years are from concerts I've been to; I love going to shows. I also love comedy, though I'm more a fan of a funny movie than stand-up (unless it's Jim Gaffigan) ... I also just like laughing and trying to make friends laugh. I'm getting back into triathlons and have been running and swimming a lot lately. Truth be told, though, I mostly like how it feels when I'm done working out. I also love great books ...

The most influential person in my life has been

The 'most' is impossible, so here goes ... someone who sees irony at every turn, likes stories with some sort of redemptive arc (the loser ends up winning, etc.), laughs a lot, values experiences more than things, is compassionate and loves music.

The last book I read and enjoyed

Richard Ford's 'The Sportswriter,' Flannery O'Connor's 'A Good Man is Hard to Find' and Joan Didion's essay 'On Self Respect' are some of my favorites from the past year or so. I also love Dostoevsky's 'Crime and Punishment' but I'm pretty sure I'm not as intense as that makes me sound.

The three things which I am most thankful for

  1. God's grace
  2. My friends
  3. Vampire Weekend's song Step and other forms of art that are beautiful and mysterious

The one thing I wish MORE people would notice about me

The one thing that surprises people most when they find it out about me (~3 years after meeting me) is that my first job after college was teaching math and physics at a Naval training school. I don't so much WISH for people to know this about me ... though I suppose I just wrote a sentence about it. I'm glad people are surprised, as I hope I've never elicited the gut reaction, "I bet this guy used to teach calculus."

Friends Describe me as

Articulate, Creative, Funny, Passionate

A little more about me

I love traveling to NYC ... I used to live there and really miss it. I suppose I go to extremes in a way, as my other favorite trip is to head to a really relaxing beach.
