More about me

The one thing I am passionate about...

I go through phases. If I have a business or project I need to work on, I need to have everything be perfectly consistent. Do the same thing every single day with a single-minded focus on your goal. But when I have free time I need a break from that. I like to try new things, go new places, and explore. I enjoy studying history, people, taking classes just for fun, reading pretty much anything. There's something to be learned from everything, really.

I typically spend my leisure time

I'll work on a project, or help a friend with his resume, fix something, or talk business with customers. But if I don't have something useful to do, doing things for their own sake is probably the best I can describe how I relax. Go somewhere new just for the hell of it, read a book and discuss it, or watch a quality film.

The most influential person in my life has been

I enjoy being around people who have examined their own beliefs, looked at the world, and come to different conclusions than I have. I enjoy being challenged in my thinking and being around open-minded people.

The last book I read and enjoyed

Sartre's Existentialism is a Humanism. I loved how he explores what it means, or what it doesn't mean, to be human. He explains it far better than I can: We are left alone, without excuse. That is what I mean when I say that man is condemned to be free. Condemned, because he did not create himself, yet is nevertheless at liberty, and from the moment that he is thrown into this world he is responsible for everything he does... Every man, without any support or help whatever, is condemned at every instant to invent man.

The three things which I am most thankful for

  1. Cheap energy and technology. The ability to just turn up the thermostat when I'm cold, or to have hot, running water on demand. The ability to travel 100 miles in a couple of hours on a whim. We live like the kings of old and we never really stop to realize it.
  2. Education. Being able to read and write, to understand the world around me, and to communicate with people across time and space. It's amazing to live in a world where anything you could care to know or learn is at your fingertips.
  3. People. Having dependable family, friends, customers, and employees. Without honest, selfless people, it's hard to accomplish anything at all.
