More about me

The one thing I am passionate about...

This is difficult to narrow down to just one thing. My job as a teacher librarian is great. I also enjoy my current regular and occasional "extracurriculars," which include a handbell choir and Toastmasters. I like to listen to, learn, and learn about languages. I speak French and English proficiently, and have studied limited amounts of Japanese, ASL, Spanish, and German. Most recently I have picked up limited words phrases in Mandarin at work.

I typically spend my leisure time

I enjoy playing in a nearby handbell choir and participating in Toastmasters. I enjoy playing orchestral and chamber music when I have the opportunity. (My instruments are violin and viola). I have also enjoyed the opportunities I have had to learn languages.

The most influential person in my life has been

Compassion and caring about others is one quality that stands out.

The first thing people notice about me

Some people think I am quiet. I can be quiet sometimes, but it depends. Sometimes I have things I want to share.

The last book I read and enjoyed

I read Sounder for the first time this year with my 6th graders. One part I liked was the mother's wisdom. The refrain she sometimes sings talks about how no one can walk your own path for you. I also enjoyed Number the Stars. The courage and willingness of the book's characters to stand up for what they believe in stood out to me the most. One quote that especially stood out: "It was only in fairy tales that people were called upon to be brave, to die for one another. Not in real-life Denmark.... [Annemarie] was glad to be an ordinary person who would never be called upon for courage." The irony of course is that she was called upon.

The three things which I am most thankful for

  1. I am thankful for my current job and work environment.
  2. I am thankful for my family.
  3. I am thankful for the people I have met, including those I now interact with on a regular basis and those whose paths have crossed mine at other times in my life.
