More about me

The one thing I am passionate about...

First and foremost, really, I am a Reader. I love to read, both fiction and non-fiction, in many different genres (history, anthropology, crime and mysteries, biographies, comparative religion, natural history, children's literature, humor, race relations, period novels; but I'm not into horror (or romance-!). I love sharing good conversation and good food, gardening, keeping house, napping with my cats, and dancing around my living room. I could spend months and years wandering through art museums and galleries.

I typically spend my leisure time

While I dearly love to attend the theater, musical performances, the ballet, movies, and the opera, I don't need to do those things to be happy or to feel as if my time has been well-spent. I love to keep my house beautiful, I love to read, walk, and think, and I love visiting with my friends and family.

The most influential person in my life has been

I think a sense of humor and an appreciation for the absurd and ridiculous in life (and especially in one's own self) is probably tops on my list of desired traits in a friend or lover. There are so many things in the world and in life that are sad, upsetting, strange, unknowable, and frightening; if we focus on them, we'll be miserable, and for what? We none of us will get out of here alive; in a short time even the best and most famous of us and our deeds will be forgotten. Let's appreciate the silly aspects of it all, enjoy our time here, and help others to do the same.

The first thing people notice about me

From what I have heard, probably my quick walk, the way I have of talking rapidly while using my hands, my silly expressions, and my gasping whoop of a laugh. People also tend to remark on my clothes and shoes a great deal (it seems I am distinctive in some way - mostly, I'm just pulled-together with a sort of playful flair). These are, now that I think of it, rather appearance-related...hmmmm...okay, my sense of humor. I am often told by total strangers that I should do stand-up comedy.

The last book I read and enjoyed

This last week I read four very fun books- Kurlansky's book on salt, Mortimer's "Time Traveler's Guide to Medieval England", "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" (hilarious), and, last night, "Summer at Tiffany", an Iowa girl's memoir of working as one of two of the first female pages at Tiffany in New York in the summer of 1945. I liked it for the descriptions of the New York I grew up reading about as a child (the New York of Radio City Music Hall, the Automat, Sardi's, The Russian Tea Room, and Schrafft's) and for the similarities of many of the author's experiences with some of my own.

The three things which I am most thankful for

  1. My family, friends, and cats are all inexpressibly dear and amazing, and keep me (basically!) sane, and I am endlessly grateful for them all.
  2. I am very, very thankful for my lovely little home in my fabulous-in-every-way neighborhood in a city that I dearly love.
  3. Finally, I am grateful for the work that makes it possible for me to have the house, maintain the cats, and treat my friends and family to fun things.

The one thing I wish MORE people would notice about me

Hmmm... well, I sometimes wish some people didn't read my friendliness, humor, and helpfulness as signs of being a pushover. I have, it is true, a lot of patience and a long fuse, but I am formidable when crossed, and I can get tired of having my boundaries tested.

A little more about me

Don't be too frightened by the three marriages - I can explain! Really! I won't attempt to do so here, in less than 600 characters, but please know that I am not a crazy person, and I have never, ever profited or benefited in any material way from any husband or boyfriend; indeed, by any male to whom I am not related by blood, and you won't be the first, I promise. I have references-!
