The one thing I am passionate about...
I am passionate about my career and job. I am a chemical engineer and have worked for the Food and Drug Administration for the past 25 years. During that time I can't think of a single day that I didn't want to go into work. It's not that I am a workaholic (since I have other interests outside of work), but just really enjoy what I do. I also like to read science in my spare time (along with history).
I typically spend my leisure time
In warmer weather I like bicycling, kayaking or working around my house (while listening to old time radio shows). In cooler weather I enjoy reading, playing and collecting board games, and (gasp!) TV. For over 40 years I thought TV a wasteland and shunned it. Now, however, I find it amazing the quality of many modern TV shows.
The most influential person in my life has been
happiness with who they are and where they are at in their life.
The first thing people notice about me
I think it's how tall I am. I'm 6'3", which is not that tall these days, but people are still surprised at my height when they are standing next to me.
The last book I read and enjoyed
...Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World, a very surprising history of the 14th century Mongol Empire. Their empire stretched from the Pacific Ocean, north into Russia, south into India, and through the Middle East into Eastern Europe. Under their rule, torture was abolished and all religions tolerated absolutely. The Mongols cemented their empire by trade, not force, and promoted local culture. All this led to an explosion of civilization and ultimately 100 years of peace. Racial jealousy in later Europe, however, led to a rewrite of Mongol history, turning them from progressive rulers into barbarians.
The three things which I am most thankful for
- My career and job. So many people hate theirs, and everyday I look forward to mine
- My family: 3 grown daughters, and my brother and his family, and my 92 year old mom.
- Running: I run 15 miles a week, outside, all year round. It's amazing mentally and physically

A little more about me
In general, my life philosophy can be summed up by a poem I had on my wall in college. It's called Desiderata and, of course, you can read it on Wikipedia. It's short and to the point and worth the read. I am a kid at heart. I believe a positive outlook, a curious nature, acceptance of others, and regular exercise keep the brain, spirit and body youthful. I like to listen to old radio shows, bake cheesecakes (it's a hobby), play ragtime piano (though I do so mainly for myself), collect and play Euro-style boardgames, and more stuff that I can't think of right now!
