The one thing I am passionate about...
I love walking and thinking. Not only does walking provide great exercise for the body but it also offers a chance to exercise the mind. I do some of my best planning and "calming" when I walk. I also am passionate about reading and learning. I enjoy watching sports, especially baseball. For years, I loved football but with all of the recent head injuries and class-action suits I've come to appreciate the "cerebral" nature of baseball (pun intended, I suppose). I also love teaching and learning. When the two work together, great things can be accomplished.
I typically spend my leisure time
I have a big front porch on my house. During the summer, I love sitting there on a breezy day, watching the hummingbirds work the feeder that hangs there. When I have a day off, I always, always take several walks and also occasionally ride the bike trails around Pittsburgh.
The most influential person in my life has been
Someone who is responsible, honest, and able to find beauty in the small things of life.
The first thing people notice about me
Usually my sense of humor. I tend to be quiet in a crowd of people ? unless you're with me. Then I may whisper funny observations about anything and everything.
The last book I read and enjoyed
I've read just about everything written by Jack Kerouac. I really enjoyed the "Dharma Bums." I also enjoy certain books on philosophy, since I teach mass media ethics & law. I particularly enjoy books that make me think.
The three things which I am most thankful for
- My health.
- My profession, which is extremely creative and fulfilling.
- My family. I'm in my early 60s and my mom is still living, as are my older brother and sister.
The one thing I wish MORE people would notice about me
Not everyone who has hit 60 is over the hill. Now that I'm in that realm, I feel the same as I did in my 30s and 40s (for the most part).
Friends Describe me as
Dependable, Easy-Going, Funny, Quiet
A little more about me
I once saw a guy about 19 years old walking a baboon (on a leash) down a crowded city street in West Africa. On another occasion, I was snorkeling in the Florida Keys and counted seven barracudas around me. Before we went into the water, our guide said: "You'll see a lot of barracudas, but don't worry. People feed them a lot. They're more curious than anything." Yeah, right! Well, I still have all my digits and every now and then I think of that kid walking the baboon. You can't make up stuff like this.I suppose I should add that one of my hobbies is doing my best NOT to be an academic. For the most part, they're a pretty scary bunch.
