The one thing I am passionate about...
I?m passionate about too many things to list here. There are the old reliables ? family, politics baseball. But really, I?m incredibly passionate about learning. Yeah, I know ? that seems like an overly broad cop out. I am in constant search of new (to me) knowledge, concepts, and interesting stories. I like thoughts that can bend my mind in ways a drug ever could. Astrophysics, Vermeer paintings, imperfect information games, Chinese aircraft carriers, evolution, human behavior, and the unique interesting stories that make up random people?s lives. The brain is our largest sexual organ and I want to be turned on all the time.
I typically spend my leisure time
When not prepping for the Zombie Apocalypse, I like to travel. Yes, I know that 87% of people say this. When my flight lands back in DC, I walk up to the counter and ask for a ticket on the next flight to any city that I didn?t just come from. If giant corporations are flying huge hunks of metal to that location, there must be something interesting there. I enjoy road trips ? rent a car, pick a direction, and just drive ? but stay off the highway ? only drive on state/two lane roads. You are certain to roll through a fascinating little town or four. I would love to take a train across the country.
The most influential person in my life has been
Someone who is always themselves (or themself?). Someone to share and enjoy the mundane with. I?m not looking to meet my clone. I?m around me all the time ? that?s enough. You are curious and confident. You are open and honest. I hope we both want to comfortably share our dreams, our fears, our fantasies. You like to have deep discussions about both serious and inane topics. Everyone?s life is an interesting story and I?ll want to stay up all night hearing yours. You know the earth is ~4.5 billion years old, evolution is objectively true, and that climate change is both occurring and is human induced.
The first thing people notice about me
Until recently, I would have given some pithy version of ?I don?t know?. A couple of years ago I began wearing a wedding band on my right ring finger ? it was my Grandfathers wedding ring. People seem to notice it right away.
The last book I read and enjoyed
Welcome to the Universe. The authors talk about some basics of astrophysics and show the math behind what is happening in the universe.
The three things which I am most thankful for
- Stand-up comedy. Laughing is fun.
- Second chances. I?ve made every mistake a middle-aged person can make in their life.
- White noise. Sleeping is not one of my skills.
Friends Describe me as
Generous, Intelligent, Kind, Spontaneous
A little more about me
---I an not very fancy. I hate getting dressed up. ---I would love to be an astrophysicist but I haven?t taken a math class since 7th grade and I would be in my mid-to-late forties by the time I finished my PhD. ---Except for the two and half years I was a professional poker player, I?ve always worked in politics. I?m just slightly left of center in an area I like to call ?reasonable and realistic.? ---Some people may think you are a genius, but if you voted for President Trump I?ll never be able to trust and respect your judgment if I?m incapacitated in a hospital.
