For women who are only attracted to possible mates in their own age-group, such as their 40’s, the mate-pool-selection is way too small. Much more about supply-and-demand.

A woman over 40 has much fewer mates possibilites than a man over 40: less social stigma for an older man to marry a much younger woman than vice-versa.
