Online gambling and relationships: a research study

by Galen Buckwalter | July 31st, 2007

For most people gambling is fun and a form of harmless entertainment. But for four to six percent of gamblers it is a devastating illness that negatively impacts every aspect of their life. And for every person who is a compulsive gambler the lives of 7-14 people are severely impacted by the lies, the debts, and the lack of attention that characterize addicts in relationships.

It has been reported that the rates of compulsive gambling go up precipitously when a casino is built in close geographical proximity. But what happens to gambling rates when almost everyone has a casino sitting on their desk in the form of a computer that is connected to the internet? Little is known about how internet gambling has impacted rates of compulsive gambling or how online gamling has impacted the lives of those who are involved with compulsive internet gamblers.

The Oxford Internet Institute, and Dr. William Dutton, is conducted a novel study on internet gambling. Here is a brief description along with an invitation to participate in this ground-breaking study. Please note that they need both gamblers and non-gamblers to participate. Oxford

The OII has now completed enrollment in this improtant study, Please check in at their site Oxford Internet Institute to follow the exciting work they are now doing.
