Asian Dating Tips

There are no set-in-stone rules when it comes to dating; every relationship is a unique adventure. That said, there are guidelines, considerations and suggestions that can give direction when first starting out. If you’re seeking a relationship in the Asian dating world, here are a few things to consider:

Asian Dating and Things to Consider: Focus

What are you looking for? It’s a question everyone should ask himself/herself before seeking a partner. With Asian dating — specifically online Asian dating — you’ll find sites and advice articles catering to men and women of different regions, looking for different relationship arrangements. Are you ready for marriage? Are you looking for likeminded individuals? Are you holding to the traditions of your family, or do you label your worldview and lifestyle considerably more modern or liberal? Are you looking for someone from a specific country? Is shared ethnicity a must-have?

Asian Dating and Things to Consider: Geography

Geography is an issue when pursuing someone with strong personal ties to another continent. If you’re dating someone from an Asian country, they likely have family there, too. Are you willing to engage with their lives there? Travel often becomes part of a couple’s life when moving forward with their relationship. Make sure you’re willing to live in both worlds.
Where someone comes from shapes much of who they’ve become. Even if you’re both from the same country, life experience and history — often tying in family expectations — won’t be identical. Early on, inquire about the role their birthplace and heritage plays in his/her daily life. Share childhood stories and let your date give you a geography lesson through their eyes.

Asian Dating and Things to Consider: Family

As mentioned above, family will likely be part of your life if you’re dating an Asian. Marriage especially is considered a family affair, so you’ll be courting the family, too. Early on in your relationship, talk about family relationships, expectations and long-term plans for their involvement in your future. There’s often a fierce loyalty toward elders, with children in America willingly supporting their families back home.
As you get to know your Asian date, show the utmost respect for his/her family. Some families will insist that you meet with the family and state your intentions before entering into a serious relationship with their daughter.

Asian Dating and Things to Consider: History and Tradition

Every culture is different, as is every individual within that culture. Honor, respect and generosity, however, are common values throughout most Asian cultures. Enter into a relationship courteously and honorably. As you get to know your date, talk about traditions, gender roles and expectations. Attitudes about physical affection can also be cultural; take things slow as you get to know one another. Talk about faith and religion; are the religious practices of their heritage still active? How compatible are your spiritual lives?
