What’s a summer without a nailbiting Janet Evanovich book at your bedside? Fortunately, America’s favorite mystery writer is back at it, this time teaming up with bestselling author Lee Goldberg for a new, blockbuster collaborative series of action-packed, fast-paced suspense novels. The first one, The Heist , is available June 18. We chatted with the clever character author about one of our favorite subjects — love!
eH: What do you believe are the ingredients to real happiness?
JE: Lowered expectations. Maintaining elevated serotonin levels through the use of chocolate. Finding joy in the commonplace.
eH: Is it more important to be loved or to love?
JE: I think they’re inseparable. If you give love you’ll be loved. This is not to be confused with obsessive behavior leading to stalking!
eH: What is the hardest thing about love?
JE: Exercising self-restraint when tempted to send embarrassingly, gushy, overly sentimental Valentine’s Day cards!
eH: When would you say was the first time you really found love?
JE: On the first date with my husband when he spilled hamburger fixings all over his shirt.
eH: What does love mean to you now versus 20 years ago?
JE: It’s twenty times bigger. Romantic love comes and goes with testosterone production, but there’s a more stable love component that increases with life experience … love for dogs, cats, grandchildren, husband, sister, son, daughter, deceased friends and relatives, sunrises, and perfectly cooked poached eggs.
eH: How do you know if someone is THE ONE?
JE: THE ONE will be kind to you, will inspire you to do good things, will be sexually compatible, will share the same moral values, and will rub your back in exchange for watching the television show of his/her choice.
eH: What is the key to your relationship success?
JE: Separate bathrooms.
eH: What advice would you like to share with women out there regarding achieving a full and balanced life?
JE: Don’t try to do it all at once. Know your priorities. Enjoy the moment.
eH: What advice would you give to those who are still looking for love?
JE: Be brave. Don’t panic. Eat cake.
