Who founded eHarmony?
In 1997, after 35 years practicing as a clinical psychologist and counseling thousands of married couples, Dr. Neil Clark Warren had come to believe that there was a better way to find love than leaving it up to chance. He knew from his experience in clinical work that although some American marriages were ending in divorce, many others were deeply satisfying unions of two fulfilled individuals. He observed that, in many cases, the marriages that endured were composed of compatible people, while marriages that deteriorated often did so because the differences between the individuals became harder to resolve over time. What if he could define the traits most likely to lead to relationship success? Could certain characteristics predict compatibility and lead to more satisfying relationships?
Dr. Warren set out to test this theory in collaboration with Dr. Galen Buckwalter, then a research professor at the University of Southern California. They sought to identify the characteristics between spouses that were consistently associated with the most successful relationships. After three years of research and development, they successfully identified the key dimensions of personality that predicted compatibility and the potential for long-term relationship success.
In 2000, Dr. Warren founded eHarmony (www.eharmony.com) and it is now the Internet’s No. 1 trusted relationship services provider. Dr. Warren has also written several books on love, marriage, and emotional health, including the best-selling "Finding the Love of Your Life," which has sold nearly one million copies and has been translated into over ten languages. Dr. Warren has a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Chicago.

How does eHarmony’s matching service work?
Each new eHarmony user begins by completing a comprehensive relationship questionnaire. After completing the questionnaire, eHarmony members are presented with a pool of matches of other users who have been scientifically evaluated to be compatible with them. eHarmony guides members through a four-stage process for getting to know their matches and making intelligent decisions about whether to initiate contact. eHarmony then enables users to directly communicate with each other, protecting their identity until they feel comfortable revealing it.
How long does it take to complete the questionnaire?
Unlike casual dating and photo personal sites, eHarmony requires a greater investment of time and effort. Because this questionnaire is used as the source for matching people with compatible partners, it is thorough and takes approximately 60 minutes to complete. It is a good investment of time because it allows eHarmony to do the matching for you. It is best to be thoughtful and honest in each response to get the best possible matches.
How can the questionnaire determine compatibility?
The questionnaire is designed to identify a person's key characteristics, beliefs, values, emotional health and skills in order to match the member with compatible users with whom there is a greater likelihood of long-term success. eHarmony is the leading dating site that delves this deeply into the important aspects of personality that influence our romantic relationships.
Why are dimensions of compatibility important?
The dimensions of compatibility are key personality characteristics that can be used to predict compatibility and potential for long-term relationship success. These dimensions were identified through observing married couples and determining which characteristics between spouses were consistently associated with the most successful relationships. The dimensions of compatibility are grouped into Core Traits and Vital Attributes. Core Traits are defining aspects of who you are that remain largely unchanged throughout your adult life. Vital Attributes are based on learning and experience and are more likely to change based on life events and decisions you make as an adult.
What are examples of dimensions of compatibility?
Examples of dimensions of compatibility in the Core Traits group are Autonomy and Kindness. The Autonomy dimension represents the degree to which you desire to maximize your time spent with a partner, versus your desire to pursue independent activities and interests. The dimension of Kindness relates to that capacity of an individual to treat other people with consistent sensitivity and empathy. Expressing support and concern for your partner, and expecting your partner to do the same, is the underlying characteristic of this dimension.
Examples of dimensions of compatibility in the Vital Attributes group are Communication Style and Conflict Resolution. Communication Style relates to both interest in communicating and ability to communicate. It summarizes the important matter of how much and how well a person is able to verbalize his or her thoughts and feelings, ask questions of another person, and determine similarities and differences between them. Conflict Resolution measures how you prefer to resolve conflicts. Being able to understand another's point of view, being respectful of other people during conflicts and dropping an issue once it is resolved all contribute to a strong score on this dimension.
